Storm names[]

Tropical cyclone naming

The following list of names was used for named storms that formed in the North Atlantic in 2017. The names not retired from this list will be used again in the 2023 season. This was the same list used in the 2011 season, with the exception of the names Jack and Lincoln, which replaced Jose and Lee. They were used for the first (and only, for Jack) time this season.

Retirement[]

On April 11, 2018, at the 40th session of the RA IV hurricane committee, the World Meteorological Organization retired the names Arlene, Bret, Jack, Ophelia and Percy from its rotating naming lists due to the number of deaths and amount of damage they caused, and they will not be used again for another Atlantic hurricane. They will be replaced with Annie, Bobby, James, Orla and Pierre for the 2023 season, respectively. With five names retired, the 2017 season has the third-highest number of storm names retired after a single Atlantic season, surpassed only by the 2005 season, which had six retired names, and the 2020 season, which had ten retired names.
