The 2022 Myanmar earthquake was a violent megathrust earthquake that occurred on a subduction zone only discovered in 2016. The event measured magnitude 8.9, with a shaking intensity of XI (very violent) being recorded in the survey following teh event. 12,300 people died, and $34 billion was done in the resulting damages. The resulting tsunami was 12 metres high, and decimated the coastlines over the Indian Ocean.

The subduction zone responsible for the earthquake was discovered in July 2016, after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit the region. Over the next few months, more earthquakes occurred, tracing the fault, which led seismologists to surmise that it was a subduction zone, and that a megathrust earthquake was likely to occur in the near future, of an expected magnitude 9, and the new zone was closely monitored.
